If the book in question is owned by MCPL and does not have Holds waiting, it may be renewed 2 times. If the book has been loaned by an outside library, we have to abide by that library's protocol. If you have a book with a yellow label attached to it (which means it came from an outside library), have your branch contact the loaning library to see if it can be renewed.
